Energy Commission Board Reviews Draft Gender Policy to Advance Inclusion in Energy Sector

The Energy Commission Board held a special meeting at the Western Serene Atlantic Hotel in Takoradi to review a draft Gender Policy and Action Plan designed to promote inclusion across Ghana's energy sector.

The policy, developed by SUNREF, consultant Dr. Rose Mensah Kutin, and the Commission's Gender Working Group, seeks to reduce inequalities and ensure equitable access to opportunities for both women and men.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, who joined the meeting virtually, reaffirmed her commitment to developing a policy aligned with the Commission's mandate. She cautioned that an institution lacking adequate representation risks reinforcing the inequalities it seeks to eliminate.

Board Chairman Professor John Gatsi emphasized that gender equality promotes inclusiveness, innovation, and efficiency while supporting Ghana's national gender policy.

Board Member Dr. Audrey Smock added that the initiative aims to close existing gaps in gender mainstreaming by recognizing the different experiences of men and women within the energy sector.

Technical consultant Dr. Rose Mensah Kutin highlighted the importance of integrating gender considerations into energy planning to address issues such as the underrepresentation of women and unequal access to energy services.

Once adopted, the policy is expected to transform the Commission's commitment into measurable action and could serve as a model for other sectors. Additional stakeholder consultations will be conducted before the policy is finalized.
